CHAPTER 12

MAYA

In her desperation to be free from the hospital halls for her vacation days, Maya had left a phone charger and her earphones behind in her locker. So now, in supreme irony, she was back to collect them. She kept her coat on despite the warmth inside, in a clear display of ”I might be at work but I’m not on shift.” Even still, Lettie gave her an odd look as she passed by the nurses’ station on her way to the staff room lockers. Before Lettie could even ask, Maya was holding up a hand.

“I forgot some stuff. Don’t ask me to do anything.”

Lettie rolled her eyes and Maya continued on her way. The staff room was empty save for a couple of resident doctors fast asleep with their heads resting on a table, and Phoebe who was at the kitchenette counter making herself a coffee.

“Why are you here?” Phoebe asked, almost disgusted at Maya’s presence at work. “You’re on vacation — go home!”

“I forgot some stuff. Calm down.”

“Buy new stuff. That would be more acceptable than coming back to work on your days off.”

Maya grinned as she foraged in her locker and found her charger and headphones, shoving them into her bag.

“I know I just told you to get lost,” Phoebe said, sipping her coffee. “But while I’ve got you here…”

“Yes?” Maya asked.

“Drinks tonight? A whole bunch of us are going to the new place that we were talking about. Even Lettie might come; Alexis is working on convincing her, and she thinks she’s about eighty percent there.”

“Oh…” Maya sighed, disappointed. “Sorry, I can’t. As much as I would love the rare opportunity to see a drunk Lettie, I already have plans.”

Phoebe cocked her head to the side, looking shocked. “Oh, okay,” she said.

“What?” Maya asked.

“No, it’s fine. I’m just surprised, is all.”

Maya grimaced internally because she didn’t blame Phoebe one bit. She never had other plans. Ever. Going out with work friends was the extent of her social life. Not that it was a bad thing, but it had been the way it was for years. But now she was going to have to give a reason, otherwise they’d all think she was dying or something, because Maya knew how dramatic her friends and colleagues could be.

“I have a date,” she said, and Phoebe’s eyes widened till the whites showed.

“Oh?” she said, perking up a little. “With who?”

“With James.” Maya had thought that their… thing, whatever it was, had been painfully obvious, but apparently not.

“Who?” Phoebe asked, confused.

“Dr. Cowley.”

“Oh…”

Maya felt like she had whiplash from the change of tone. “Oh?”

“You’re still going to go on a date with him?” Phoebe asked, a funny look on her face.

Maya felt herself getting defensive, but not for her sake. Her hackles were raised as if she wanted to protect James when he wasn’t here to defend himself. “Is there something wrong with that?”

“Maya, he ignored you for days like an absolute scuzzball, and you’re just going to keep going on dates with him?”

“He apologized,” Maya said firmly.
